The shade of the king howls with an echoing, cursed scream that seems to shatter the barrier between this world and the next. If you want this boss to have a minion, I strongly recommend the giant undead bird pictured on its shoulder in the above artwork. ![]() Think of this as an ability that the boss doesn’t necessarily have control over, rather than trying to use it tactically. This boss should swap between corporeal and incorporeal form pretty frequently, at least once per round. If the players walk into the hall leading to the throne room and get affected before even opening the door, that’s not nearly as effective or dramatic. I strongly recommend leaving the boss’s aura disabled until the fight starts. For this boss, however, that just didn’t make sense. I use legendary actions for bosses a lot in my own games, but typically convert them to work within the normal rules of Pathfinder when I post them on my blog, changing them into immediate actions and attacks of opportunity. ![]() This boss uses legendary actions, a mechanic stolen from D&D 5e. As the boss alternates between forms, either that player or the other players will be able to deal full damage. When the boss arises from the throne, the haunt triggers, picking one player at semi-random to dispossess from their body and turn incorporeal. The boss should be sitting on the throne when the players arrive. This boss is designed to function with a specific magic item, The Black Throne, which is also a haunt. This may happen when the tomb itself is desecrated and lost to time, or may happen if a necromancer tries to revive the king as an undead creature and control him. ![]() ![]() Unlike a normal cursed king, which is a usurper left undead as a mockery of its supposed authority, a shade of a cursed king is an actual king, cursed to undeath and often left in a tomb where the king’s soul retains its true authority and enacts it on any who dare trespass or oppose him.
